BURST Performance
Kunsthaus Graz

It's an artistic research from which an interdisciplinary performance project was developed. The research is based on conversations with people who have suffered different types of discrimination (sexism, racism, queerphobia, xenophobia, among others). Fourteen hours of sound and video material were collected from these interviews. The result is an immersive performance, in which the music and the choreography, were inspired by the stories and body language of our interview partners. A sound installation and a video were also developed from the interview material, promoting another layer of information. By exploring the potential of different art mediums, the audience could perceive the content in different ways.
The first edition of “Burst” took place at the Kunsthaus Graz, together and in relation to Sol LeWitt’s Wall, in Space 1. It happened on March 15 and 16, 2024, with double performances on both days.

Sound Installation & Film Screening
The sound installation and video screening ran not only during the performance, but throughout the entire weekend (15, 16 and 17 March) 2024 in Kunsthaus Graz.
The sound installation had integrated a remarkable dodecahedral loudspeaker that can emit sound in different directions, using the surrounding walls as reflectors. This innovative loudspeaker was positioned in the centre of the room and served as a focal point, complemented by an equidistant octophonic loudspeaker system discreetly hidden behind the walls.
The complex layers of the musical composition travelled elegantly through these loudspeakers, supported by advanced multi-channel playback technology. Before and after the performances, the sound installation played back parts of the interview material, interweaving snippets of interviews with parts of the composition to enrich the listening experience. As visitors walked through the immersive environment, enveloped by the reflective surfaces of Sol LeWitt's wall, they were immersed in a symphony of voices and musical elements dynamically molded by the spatial arrangement of sound.

The Dodocaedro is a piece produced by our sound engineer and sound artist Micha Romanov in collaboration with Jo Jauch (wood design) and Martin Schachner (technical realisation) and borrowed for this project.

The video screening consisted of a selection of fragments from the interview material. The idea was to share a piece of our artistic research with the audience and to present who the individuals who were telling their stories.
